Life-Long Learner and

Reflective Practitioner

As an adult learner my self-identity is linked to my past experiences, particularly when I experienced a role change such as loss of employment, career change, loss of a child, and much more. These experiences caused what Jack Mezirow describes as the beginning of the rational reflection process, the first stage, “disorienting dilemma” or picturing the event (Merriam & Bierema, 2014). These life changing experiences set in motion the process for my self-directed learning (SDL). The SDL process made it easier for me to take responsibility for my learning and build my confidence along the way. I developed new knowledge and skills through life changing experiences that were critical to my adult development and learning.

The acquisition of knowledge is ongoing for me. It is also an important part of my life and a form of survival for me as a part of the aging population in the twenty first century. In section two of this portfolio you will find reflective pieces that will show how I fostered life-long learning, facilitate professional growth, and engaged in and foster reflective practice.
